| Launch of Vancouver Island Chapter of CSTD |
 |
On May 6, Calliope Learning is helping to
organize a
launch event for the Vancouver Island Chapter of
the Canadian Society for Training and
Development (CSTD). If you are on the Island it
would be
lovely to see
you between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm at the Coast
Harbourside
Hotel.
Using activities from two large group planning
techniques (Future Search and the Institute of
Cultural Affairs (ICA) Workshop Method), Dave
Whittington and Tammy Dewar will facilitate
exploration of current trends and issues in
training and development. Following this
exploration, participants will be engaged in a
visioning and planning exercise for the launch
of a Vancouver Island chapter of the CSTD. This
evening promises to be full of interaction,
networking and opportunities for shaping the
vision and activities of the Vancouver Island
CSTD chapter.
We
believe there are many benefits to having a
chapter on
Vancouver Island. CSTD has the following
description
on their Web site.
"A Chapter is a foundation unit of CSTD. Its
purpose is
to provide opportunities for its members to
network,
learn and develop professionally. Each chapter
elects
the executive committee and hosts local events that
meet the needs of that community."
Please email Tammy at tammy@calliopelearning.com
if you would like to register for the event.

| Emotional Intelligence |
 |
Emotional Intelligence has become a hot topic in
organizational development circles. In
particular "emotional intelligence, or EQ, is
highly
correlated with success in both professional and
personal pursuits". It was time for Tammy and I
to find
out more. We'd like to share some thoughts.
We worked with Kelley Marko of Marko Consulting
Services Inc. and the BarOn EQ-i assessment
tool. We
found the whole process very informative and
enlightening. On a technical level, it was
interesting to
read about the BarOn EQ-i validation process and
compare
this to how the MBTI has been validated over the
years. The two tools have been through some very
rigorous validation and given that they measure
quite
different things could easily be used together
in a coaching situation.
Kelley provided some valuable pre-reading and
set up
access to the online instrument. Completing the
assessment was a straightforward process. It
took just
over half an hour to answer the 133 multichoice
questions. This provides a rating on 5 composite
scales (intrapersonal, interpersonal, stress
management, adaptability and general moood), 15
subscales and an overall EQ score.
The final results were fascinating, and provide
much to reflect on, but the most valuable part
of the
process for us was the face to face debrief with
Kelley.
Through his questions and observations, we were
able to apply the results to our personal and
professional lives. As fate (and life!) would
have it, we were immediately tested by how much
we had learned when we discovered our car had
been broken into! We leave it to the readers to
imagine the emotional intelligence that we
demonstrated ;)

| Online Learning and Learning Styles |
 |
|
Related, somewhat, to a person's emotional
intelligence,
which of course can be developed, is their
personality
type, which is less easy to change (if at all).
Some
research carried out by Calliope Learning looked
at how
personality type informs learning style and in
turn, how
learners use this self-knowledge to make
best use
of e-learning opportunities.
We worked with a group of online learners who had a
pretty sophisticated understanding of their MBTI
(Myers-Briggs Type Indicator). In an online
discussion
we asked various questions about behaviours they
adopted to suit their personality and learning
preferences.
The study concluded with lists of strategies
that might
help different personality types make the most of e-
learning opportunities.
N.B. This research was first published in 2000 when
Dave was still working at the University of
Glasgow, but we thought we'd point some of our
new readers to this resource.
