The Muse . Thoughts on Learning
June 2003 (Vol 1, No 4)
.
. . . . . . . . .
Greetings,

welcomes you to the Muse, our monthly email newsletter! The focus of our newsletter is learning - in all its various forms - and we're going to do our best to keep it informative, engaging, and motivational. We also invite you to forward this to a friend!

Curious about the name of the newsletter? The Muse refers to Calliope, who is the goddess of epic poetry, one of the 12 Greek muses who, collectively, looked after learning and the arts. We're hoping you find our monthly newsletter a bit of learning ... and a bit of art.

Last month's survey asked about the future importance of m-learning. About half the respondants said it would be extremely important. All the others said it would be very important. It looks as if we're all looking forward to a wireless future!

  • Appreciative Inquiry Briefing Paper
    .
In April we attended an Appreciative Inquiry Intensive, facilitated by Cathy Royal. There was a lot of learning over the three days and we've now done our best to summarise this in an AI Briefing Paper.

We've integrated some basic information about AI with some of own insight and experience. We hope you find it useful.

    ICA Courses
    .
Tammy first became aware of the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA) in 1990 when she took a 16 day intensive retreat on leadership in Chicago, a transformative learning experience. She recently renewed her learning by taking two courses this June, Facilitation Skills and the Organizational Journey.

The highlight of the facilitation skills course was the opportunity to practice each method and gain feedback from other participants. The other "gem" was a September, 1994 Edges article included with the course manual, "The Magic of the Facilitator" which listed 14 competencies for facilitators, including a metaphorical name for each competency. Competencies such as The Evocateur, The Orchestrator, The Drano Function, Highwire Balancing Act and Big Shoulders inspired Tammy to think more deeply about her role as an educator/facilitator. You can order this article from their website.

The Organizational Journey course introduced a fascinating tool, Mapping the Organization (which can also be ordered from their website), developed out of ICA's ongoing research and consulting with organizations. It examined 8 aspects of organizational life - skills, leadership, structure, preoccupation, mission context, the worker, communication and values - and outlined 4 main types of organizations - hierarchical, institutional, collaborative and learning. This tool would be a helpful addition to using the LearningEdge Learning Signature, and is an excellent diagnostic for helping any consultant determine the readiness of the organization for specific kinds of interventions.

    BCHRMA Conference Review
    .
A big thank you to Janeen McClellan, recently certified in LearningEdge, for helping to staff the booth at the BCHRMA Conference in Vancouver June 11 and 12. We enjoyed meeting lots of new people and the great food at the Vancouver Conference Center!

Congrats to our Chapters gift certificate winners - Ruth Comisarow of Comisarow Consulting Psychology Inc, Suzanne Wright of Chris Green & Associates, Darlene Dean of Westminster Savings Credit Union, Diana Millen of the BC Public Service Agency, and Rikki Jacobson of the City of Vancouver. We hope you enjoy your reading!

The highlight of the conference for Tammy was meeting Carole Kanchier, whose research and book on Questers, was an early and important influence for Tammy. Carole challenges us to remain committed to our "quest" for meaningful work. Check out her website (linked above) for information about her book and other services.

    What's New?
    Our news ...

Dave is half way through an online communities of practice workshop with Etienne Wenger (hence the cartoon) and will share his learning with everyone in next month's edition.

Tammy has just completed two face to face workshops with the Institute of Cultural Affairs, and offers her insights in this edition.

We've also completed our AI briefing paper, and that's our lead story this month.

We've had a lot of fun (and some learning!) putting together a conference booth. (Thanks to Teresa Hamilton of Heydon Grahics for her invaluable assistance!) Its first outing was the BCHRMA conference where it had a great reception.

Look out for the Calliope Learning booth at the International Association of Facilitators Annual Conference in Ottawa on June 19-22.
