The Muse . Thoughts on Learning
April 2003 (Vol 1, No 2)
.
. . . . . . . . .
Greetings,

wishes you a Happy Easter and welcomes you to the second edition of the Muse, our monthly email newsletter! The focus of our newsletter is learning - in all its various forms - and we're going to do our best to keep it informative, engaging, and motivational. We also invite you to forward this to a friend!

Curious about the name of the newsletter? The Muse refers to Calliope, who is the goddess of epic poetry, one of the 12 Greek muses who, collectively, looked after learning and the arts. We're hoping you find our monthly newsletter a bit of learning ... and a bit of art.

  • Learning Organization Research
    .
Calliope Learning conducted an online survey in December, 2002 to gather views on how organizations were implementing learning organization theory. We were pleased with our response of over 100 people from across the world.

We've now finished analyzing the results and the final report can be downloaded by clicking here or on the resources link to the right.

As we noted in the last issue, we were very interested to find out that over 70% of respondents indicated they used some form of e-learning. We asked you about your experience of e-learning. The following two graphs highlight the results.

In the conclusions of the learning organization research we questioned whether or not the e-learning taking place in organizations was linked to the aims of developing a learning organization or was more to do with training and the delivery of mandatory content. This month's question asks you to rate the e-learning going on your organization on a scale of one to five, where one indicates that all your e-learning is content centric and tends to be linked to specific training needs, and five indicates a very learner centred approach to the e-learning, where, for example, the development of communities of practice is important.

N.B. Submission of this survey is only available with emailed newsletters.
The e-learning that takes place in my organization is ...

    1. Very content centric and closely related to training
    2. More to do with content than with learning organizations
    3. Well balanced :)
    4. More to do with learning organizations than with content
    5. Very learner centric
    We don't have any e-learning :(

    E-Learn Manchester - Conference Highlights
    .
The opening keynote from Jay Cross really set the tone for this conference. Jay talked eloquently about the "Life and Death of E-Learning", how venture capital had funded a "euphoria" that ultimately has failed to deliver. All is not lost however, as Jay predicts a rebirth of e-learning. It will be better aligned to business goals and involve the "extended enterprise" in learning that isn't just blended but is a "broadband bouillabaisse" that would recognize the importance of informal learning and would be much more learner centric.

The other conference speakers, including Tammy, picked up on this theme of a more learner centred approach to blended e-learning. Success stories from British Aerospace Engineering, Rolls Royce and Peugeot cars all revolved around blended approaches that balanced the needs of the learner with those of the business.

Many speakers were there from the academic side of things. The e-learning conference in October, 2002 (which was organized by these same people) had been almost completely dominated by the corporate sector. It's also interesting to note that this conference was maybe a quarter of the size of the October, 2002 conference (in terms of vendor exhibition ... they had the same number of seminars). I think the e-learning bubble has burst, and it was interesting to see who was left!

There were around 20 vendors as part of the exhibition and almost without exception they were all "pushing content". It was fascinating because almost all of the conference speakers were highly critical of this content centric view ... and there were virtually no people at the vendor stands for the entire two days! Perhaps they await Jay's rebirth.

    Updates

We've been working with Worldwide Learning to make their pricing structure more compatible with the Canadian market. In that regard, we will be looking to produce and distribute the materials in Canada to bring down costs. We're also negotiating different pricing structures to accommodate the budgets of small organizations. Next month's newsletter will detail these changes.

We're also excited by the updated CD ROM that accompanies the paper based materials. This computer based application allows consultants to easily collate data and generate reports for their clients. Contact us if you would like a demonstration.
