About the Name Calliope
While the name Calliope may first remind people of
the musical instrument, it is the association to Greek mythology that is
intended. According to Greek (and sometimes Roman) mythology, the lord
of gods and men, Zeus, mated with Titaness Mnemosyne, Memory, who gave
birth to the Muses, the patronesses of learning and the arts.
Allegorically then, Memory with divine help (Zeus) produced inspiration.
The Muses, whose name means the Reminders, may originally have been
water spirits with the power of prophecy and inspiration, imagined from
the babbling of waters as they flow. Calliope, in particular, presides
over epic poetry.
